I’ve known David for about half a century, with a break in the middle while he was pursuing his medical training. In the Ithaca era, I spent my days hanging out at David’s upstairs bookstore Everyman, I still have some nice old books I liberated from there. After we reconnected (80’s?), there were many fine visits to Baker Street over the years, and on rare occasions I was able to convince David to make the trek to whatever wilderness I called home at the time.
David visited me in Nevada city and we went up to Donner Summit and climbed Mount Judah. I have a photo somewhere of David on top of the mountain, where he found a couple of stone tablets that he hoisted up to his chest and posed looking skyward a la Charlton Heston. I wish I could share it but but all my photos are in storage while my wife and I search for a new home.
In the mid ‘oughts David and I took a trip to Utah and toured through Zion and several other of the parks. I have another photo somewhere of David wandering through the desert in Capital Reef under a giant sandstone arch. I’ll dig it up someday.
Over the past few months, David seemed to be living his best life, traveling, playing his beloved cello, and caring for whoever came to him in need.
The last email I got from David was on December 27th, with the following link:
Subject: Bach on a rainy night, the great Midori
All the best to all who were fortunate to have known David. Who will bring the salt, indeed.
